The leather will need some cleaning and conditioning...
The bottoms of the handles - where they go around the d-rings - are worn. See last photograph. To make this a practical/useful long lasting bag I would suggest having a shoemaker or leathersmith or harness-maker reinforce the leather at the bottom of each handle.
Actually, for display purposes (museum or private collection),
No chances would be made. That's how we have not conditioned the leather. We have left it in it's true vintage condition, which as I said, it's quite remarkable for its age.
