    Description

Your bid is for the February 1954 issue of TRAINS Magazine, which is Volume 14, Number 4. This issue measures 21 by 28.6 cm, contains 68 pages and is the very LAST issue produced under the very temporary experimental title of TRAINS & TRAVEL. In RN&EC, Editor David P. Morgan attacks the ICC formula used to obtain psgr deficits; CPR had the first dome car..... in 1902; Cleveland Union Terminal cuts the power; and new box cars cost less than 15 cents a pound. PENNSY'S NEW JUICE JACKS by Henry F. Dimmler tells us about the competing E2b's and E3b's over 7 pages, including 8 photos. Who would have thot then that something called ConRail would prefer to run diesels under energized wires? And that the new fancy electrics would not replace GG-1's? DON'T LOOK NOW, BUT ISN'T THAT A FLYING COW? by R.W.F. Schmidt is an airport manager's admittance of his love of railroading. Three cartoons by H. Reid illustrate this piece spread over 5 pages.  WALK RIGHT IN...... by Frank P. Donovan, Jr. is the story of railroad vice-president and general manager, Harry Congdon, of the Saint Paul Union Depot Company and the Minnesota Transfer Railway. This 4 page article, by one of railroading's finest writers, follows Congdon around on a typical day and 7 photos will help you decide whether you want this job or not. PHOTO SECTION starts off its 17 pages with a Frisco meet at Hoxie, Arkansas; a grand centerfold on the B&O roundhouse at Cumberland, Maryland, way back when entitled SAND PATCH SOLDIERS; 2 fine winter photos of Kiester, Minnesota; a wide-open photo of wide-open F's on the Rio Grande line to Leadville at <10 MPH with 75 trailing loaded wagons; 336,250 pounds of UP Tractive Effort hauling freight into Buford, Wyoming, .... backwards at 40 MPH; Alhambra roundhouse in Los Angeles in steam and more. ARE YOU LISTENING, MR. GORDON? is a 2 page piece by newspaper editor Bruce Hutchinson asking the Canadian National President to keep a few proper whistle blowers on the property. DESTINED TO DIE YOUNG by F.H. Howard is Famous Steam Locomotives No.23 and is the 3 page story of Canadian Pacific's little Pacifics Nos. 1200-1301. A fine double-page builder's photo of the 1200 is included. IT'S NOT JUST ANOTHER BRANCH by Wayne Leeman is the story of the Current River Railroad which became a Frisco Branch of the same name running across southern Missouri from Willow Springs to Chicopee. This fine 4 page work includes a small map and 7 photos, with one going back to 1903. RPO and the usual shorts finish this issue. Full page ads this month by ALCO, AAR, F-M, EMD, Hyatt, ERIE, M&StL, Timken and Magnus. This magazine is in excellent condition. The spine is professionally protected against deterioration and contamination with Scotch No.845 Book Tape. Your satisfaction guaranteed. Please see my other eBay auctions for more rare and scarce railroad paper. I provide personal service without silly eBay games like waiting for payment before shipping, mandated payment methods, clumsy communications and charging for return shipping. Please check my feedback and DSR's. Everything I sell is POSTPAID USA, so the winning bid is what you pay, plus eBay’s state tax if applicable, unless you want special services. I normally ship first day after auction ends IF I have a payment plan & a proper shipping address, or you are a recent previous buyer. Thank you for reading.
