    Description

Your bid is for the December 1949 issue of TRAINS Magazine, which is Volume 10, Number 2. This standard-sized publication measures 21.1 by 28.6 cm and contains 68 pages. 4-6-6-4's on the WM meet in the mountains on the cover in a company photo. In RN&EC, Editor Willard V. Anderson encourages the railroads to be more PR conscious; UP opens its new 6,700 foot tunnel at Altamont, Wyoming; C&O sells 3 domes to D&RGW; narrow gauge lines in the Rockies are besieged with tourists; and DL&W would like to sell you 15 acres of steam locomotive repair shops in Scranton, Pennsylvania. HARRISBURG by Al Rung covers this fascinating Pennsy city all too briefly on 4 pages with 8 photos. DIESELS TO DIXIE by David P. Morgan examines the Southern Railway System and the economics and other factors relating to its switch from steam to diesel. This is no casual review, and as you know well, the devil is always hiding in the details, so Morgan covers 10 pages with this definitive work. Included is a full page map, a complete roster of all diesel power, a brief listing of remaining steam by type only, and 10 representative photos. The South(ern) rises again! ONE MILE, ONE MILLION shows and tells in a 4 page staff article how the Great Northern spent ,000,000 to straighten out one mile of track in Nason Creek Canyon, just east of the Cascade Tunnel. A good map and 7 photos will show you the picture. SMOKY MOUNTAIN by William H. Schmidt, Jr. is about Sevierville, Tennessee, and the Smoky Mountain Railroad over 3 pages with a photo. The V&T of the east? PHOTO SECTION covers 9 pages and features the New Haven along the Naugie by Kent Cochrane; The Laurentian at speed in a fine Ray Tobey centerfold; THE HUB with 7 photos in and around Boston by Wayne Brumbaugh; and Sacramento Northern and Oklahoma Railway electrics. A DAY ON THE SANTA FE by Willard V. Anderson is all about riding the Kansas Cityan from Dearborn Station, Chicago, to Union Terminal, Kansas City, in this 4 page piece, including 4 photos. This was the way it was!  SURVEY IN CHINA is 6 photos taken before Liberation spread over 2 pages. Now the shoe is on the other foot as China's railways lead the world in many, many ways. GTW REVERSES THE TREND by Cleland B. Wyllie tells over 5 pages how the Grand Trunk Western intends to discover if local psgr trains can be profitable. 6 photos are included, all taken at Durand, Michigan. RPO and the usual shorts finish this issue. Full page ads by ERIE, F-M, M&St.L, CB&Q, 6 NE ROADS, RPM, LIONEL, SP, AAR and NP. This magazine is in excellent condition with just signs of careful handling. The spine is professionally protected against deterioration and contamination with Scotch No.845 Book Tape. Your satisfaction guaranteed. Please see my other eBay auctions for more rare and scarce railroad paper. I provide personal service without silly eBay games like waiting for payment before shipping, mandated payment methods, clumsy communications and charging for return shipping. Please check my feedback and DSR's. Everything I sell is POSTPAID USA, so the winning bid is what you pay, plus eBay’s state tax if applicable, unless you want special services. I normally ship first day after auction ends IF I have a payment plan & a proper shipping address, or you are a recent previous buyer. Thank you for reading.
