Description
In very good condition. This is a Top-Quality CD of 1,198 train order images from the Southern Pacific Railroad, covering the old Coast Division plus a few connecting lines. The Coast Division basically ran from San Francisco to Los Angeles, but I included the line south of Oakland as well, as it connected with the Coast Division at San Jose, California. Also included is the line over to Tracy from Redwood Junction, plus a few smaller lines that were in the vicinity and connected in some way to the Coast Division as it stood back then.Included are 3 station lists showing each number of train order images available from that location.
Also included are 17 misc. employee timetable pages from the Coast Division that cover all of this territory, so you can see where each location was, with respect to the others. This was all train order territory in the old days. By the time train orders disappeared, around 1986, many of the main lines on the SP were still run by train orders. Even in CTC territory, trains received slow orders and clearance cards, even without running authority because of the CTC.
In addition to these 17 misc. pages, included is a small timetable compendium of 5 different employee timetables, listed as follows:
Northwestern Pacific System ETT #2 8-22-1971 8 pages;
SP Coast Division ETT #181 4-30-1961 12 pages;
SP Los Angeles Div. #1 10-28-1973 47 pages;
SP Western Div. #13 7-29-1979 57 pages; and
Visalia Electric system #38 12-8-1946 6 pages. Total 130 pages in the compendium, and 17 more as mentioned above. Grand total of employee timetable images is 147.
There are 70 different locations represented here, with at least one train order image from each one. In later years, around 1976, the SP decided to show their stuff and put the company name on their train order forms, after many years of using generic blank forms with no company name on them.
Ages of the orders range from 1897 to 1985. I am very thankful to have obtained these orders before the SP and other roads did away with them entirely. Many of these stations and towers were closed in the 1950's and 1960's. Those that remained open, still copied a lot of train orders, as traffic was always fairly heavy in this whole area.
Where they fit, I included clearance cards with complete sets of orders. I didn't show too many of these, as clearance cards are basically a recap of all the orders listed, but did give trains authority to move. All trains had to be cleared before proceeding.
The 12 pictures shown are just a sampling of the quantity and variety of locations, operators' names, engine numbers (a few steam) and other operations unique to this large and very interesting piece of Railroad.
This CD shows many track conditions, operating procedures, and many meets and flag orders, all consistent with train-order operation. This is some of the best Railroad reading anywhere.
Very nice items that are obsolete and no longer used by any Railroad.
