Description
In very good condition. This is a Top-Quality CD of 168 Rock Island Railroad train order images from Short Line Junction tower in Des Moines, Iowa.Included is a small compendium of 6 Rock Island timetables, both public and employee. All of the employee timetables show Short Line Junction somewhere, and the public timetable shows Des Moines on multiple pages, so you know every passenger train through Des Moines went by this tower. These timetables are:
CRI&P Des Moines Division ETT #4 10-31-1965 23 pages;
CRI&P Des Moines Division ETT #9 7-20-1969 34 pages;
CRI&P Des Moines Division ETT #1 1-1-1972 40 pages;
CRI&P Missouri-Kansas Division ETT No. 3 12-29-1974 36 pages;
CRI&P Rock Island Division ETT No. 7 10-25-1959 19 pages; and
CRI&P system public timetable dated 10-27-1957 20 pages.
There is a grand total of 172 timetable pages here, both public and employee. These cover a lot of trackage near to and far away from Short Line Junction. This will make for some very good extra reading, in addition to the train orders.
A list of all operators' names that copied orders in this CD is included as well. As stated on the list, I am sure there were many other train-order operators that copied orders here besides the names of the guys listed.
This was a very strategic location on the Rock Island, as two main lines crossed at this tower. One main line went from Chicago to Omaha and beyond, and the other went from Minneapolis to Kansas City and beyond. The lines north and south of Des Moines were part of the Rock Island's "Spine Line".
This CD is made up entirely of main-line movement. No branch lines are included. All Rock Island lines out of Des Moines were train-order territory. This tower was built in 1926 and lasted well after 1980, when C&NW used it to copy their orders out of Des Moines, both on former Rock Island track and original C&NW track.
I believe this tower copied at least 10 million train orders. See the first picture for the information sheet showing my arithmetic.
Ages of these orders range from 1937 to 1979. A very few of these orders are from the steam era. Most are from the 1960s and 1970s. The Rock went out of business on March 30, 1980. One of the saddest days in American history.
The 12 pictures shown are just a sampling of the quantity and variety of operators' names, engine numbers, and other operations unique to this location and area. Both main lines were very well-traveled pieces of Railroad.
The orders in this CD show many facets of the Rock Island's operations, track conditions, and all kinds of meets and flag orders, all consistent with train-order operation. This is some of the best Railroad reading anywhere.
Very nice items that are obsolete and no longer used by any Railroad.
