Your bid is for the January 1937 issue of RAILROAD STORIES Magazine, which is Volume 21, Number 2, of the 1929 series of RAILROAD MAGAZINE that was published under at least seven different titles 1906-79. This digest-sized publication, by the Frank A. Munsey Company of 280 Broadway in New York City, measures 17.5 by 25.0 cm and contains 152 pages, plus the wraps. The cover painting by Emmett Watson is called "Two of a Kind". This issue begins with a Novelette, SNOW ON THE IRON, by the popular Ed Samples that fills 27 pages. HORSE CARS OF FIFTY YEARS AGO is interesting reading on a single page to anyone who wonders how the companies kept conductors honest. Long before the fare counter, there was the bell punch and strip slip, pick or blue. TRUE TALES OF THE RAILS begins with THE GREAT HINCKLEY FIRE by James Root as he reiterates his experiences during the Minnesota disaster of 01 September 1894 that killed about 500 people. Hinckley was where the St. Paul & Duluth crossed the Eastern Minnesota Railway. This is a comprehensive report filling 7 pages, including a map, an Eng photo and 3 drawings. The writer was an engineman who passed out from the heat, but survived due to the fact that his fireman jumped into the tender water. A DOZEN CHRISTMAS THRILLS is just that: a dozen brief remembrances by 12 writers of occurrences on Christmas Day. Roads covered are Southern Pacific with a snow shed wreck, Rock Island, Southern, Canadian National, MKT, C&EI, Long Island Rail Road, Trans-Siberian, B&O and the Omaha Road. All this is spread over 8 pages. Great reading from diverse sources. THE LAST OF THE NARROW-GAGES by Earle Davis is a most interesting contemporary report on the 26 or so narrow gage lines in the USA still operating common carrier services on some 2,100 miles of line. Coincidentally, this comprehensive work covers some 26 pages and includes 26 photos, 2 maps and a drawing. No, a page and photo was not dedicated to each operating line as we may have wished, but the list of the lines at the end, including miles of track, is a most useful reference. And the map of the West clearly shows what was meant by the Great Narrow Gage Circle. The Monson and the Robbins RR's show 6 miles each, D&RGW comes in with 741 and Colorado and Southern with 251.
