Description
Your bid is for the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society RAILROAD HISTORY No.151, with a publication cover date of AUTUMN 1984. This digest-sized book measures 15.1 by 22.8 cm and contains 128 pages, plus the wraps. Note: the cover is in horizontal format, the rest of the book is not! The watercolor on the front cover by Elizabeth Tone Summers depicts an Illinois Terminal Class D articulated motor. Editor Robert C. Post uses the Editor's Page to welcome the talented and prolific William D. Middleton to the pages of Railroad History, and also to note the editor's five years at his demanding post. THE 1984 RAILROAD HISTORY AWARDS are detailed over 4 pages, including 2 photos. PROFILE: JOHN A. GOODWIN devotes 3 pages and a photo to this fine gentleman and Boston and Maine RR historian. Wouldst there were more like him! GUEST EDITORIAL: ON BOOKS, REVIEWS, AND VALUES by Robert A. LeMassena spends 3 pages discussing the value of various rail publications and the lack of proper valuations in reviews. ELECTRIC RAILWAY FREIGHT by William D. Middleton is a definitive work on this subject spanning some 54 pages and including 67 photographs. The photos are endearing and the tightly bound nature of these books makes scanning very difficult, but I'll try my best to show you a few below. Anyone familiar with Middleton's books: The Interurban Era; Time of the Trolley; When the Steam Roads Electrified, etc. will understand why I shall write no further. Except to say that photo reproduction in this volume is excellent. THE ANGLO-AMERICAN RAILROAD WAR AT ARCHANGEL, 1918-1919 by Benjamin D. Rhodes tells this strange tale in considerable detail over 14 pages, including 5 photos and a map. Archangel is a port city in northern Russia. CHINA --- THE LAST CITADEL by J. W. Swanberg warns readers that steam traction is all but gone everywhere but China. An SY and a QJ in photos grace 2 of the 3 pages in this article. And the steam clock has never stopped in the past quarter century and that explains why we went on my 8th, and 7th last, trip to China in May 2007. I have visited all but a few of the remaining hot spots, so am unlikely to return again for steam. See RAILROAD HISTORY No.193 for my report on the last of world mainline steam locomotion. ON TIME: RAILROADS AND THE TEMPO OF AMERICAN LIFE by James A. Ward devotes 9 pages to this discussion. My grandmother taught me that only poor folks hurry and I didn't want to live that way. I didn't and I don't. THE "O.K. QUINCY ROUTE" by William D. Edson discusses the Quincy, Omaha & Kansas City Railway over 6 pages, including 3 photos, a CB&Q PTT reproduced page and a rather complete locomotive roster. Discussion, Notes and Queries, Book Reviews and other miscellaneous end this edition. Except for the superb Pacific Electric drawing by Betty Tone on the rear cover. This book is in excellent, unread, new-old-stock condition right out of the printer’s carton.Your satisfaction guaranteed. Please see my other eBay auctions for more rare and scarce railroad paper. I provide personal service without silly eBay games like waiting for payment before shipping, mandated payment methods, clumsy communications and charging for return shipping. Please check my feedback and DSR's. Everything I sell is POSTPAID USA, so the winning bid is what you pay, plus eBay’s state tax if applicable, unless you want special services. I normally ship first day after auction ends IF I have a payment plan & a proper shipping address, or you are a recent previous buyer. Thank you for reading.
