    Description

Your bid is for the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society RAILROAD HISTORY No.150, with a publication cover date of SPRING 1984. This digest-sized book measures 15.3 by 22.8 cm and contains 152 pages, plus the wraps. Editor Robert C. Post uses the Editor's Page to announce the addition of William L. Withuhn and Bill Edson as new Associate Editors. Anyone interested in locomotive history will be very familiar with these two names. PROFILE: H. Arnold Wilder devotes 3 pages, including a fine photo, to one of my very favorite people. When I think of the B&M's North Country, or of the first railfan excursions of the 1930's, or of a fine gentleman and horse lover, or of the most popular author who ever wrote for the B&M BULLETIN, I think Arnold. He'll always be a tough act to follow! Arnold died on 23 May 2009, lacking 3 days to be 100 years old. GUEST EDITORIAL: BASIC CONSERVATION FOR HISTORIC DOCUMENTARY MATERIAL by Thomas D. Norris is basically 8 pages of interesting ..errr........ stuff. Yes, you should be nice to your railroad paper, but I have used tape by the kilometer for preservation and repair for 50+ years and will continue to do so. And I have many items in my own library back to the 1830's and 1840's. Hey, to each his own, but if it is truly valuable, make a photocopy and sell or donate the original! Photographs are something else and I don't go there. ONCE THE GREATEST OF BUILDERS: THE NORRIS LOCOMOTIVE WORKS by John H. White, Jr., devotes 69 pages to the definitive work on this early Philadelphia locomotive builder. Begun in the early '30's, by the '50's Norris was the largest manufacturer of locomotives in the U.S. and out of business circa 1867. The first 40 pages by White contain dozens of drawings from an 1855 visit to the works and is quite unique in railroad history as we know it. The last 29 or so pages of this work is THE NORRIS CONSTRUCTION RECORD as compiled by William D. Edson and starts with June 1831 and ends before 1870. An Index of purchasers follows and is most useful if you want to see what was purchased when by the Boston and Maine or the Fitchburg or the Guanabocoa. All in all, a great addition to our store of locomotive history. Perhaps worth noting is the news that the City of Brotherly Love has resumed construction of railway passenger cars. Perhaps locomotives will follow someday? Probably not, as the money in transportation is carrying people, not freight, and EMU's have replaced psgr locomotives in most highly developed countries. WILLIAM MONTGOMERY'S NOVA SCOTIA IRON WORKS by Fritz Lehmann fills 20 pages with the detailed 1870's story of this Halifax company. Included is a rare 1871 inventory of all the machines and major tools used in the shop and a locomotive roster. AMERICAN RAILROADERS IN SIBERIA, 1917-1920, by Carolyn B. Grubbs fills 9 pages including 4 photos. Discussion, Notes and Queries, Book Reviews and the other regulars finish out this fine book. This long out-of-print book is in excellent, nearly as-published condition.
Your satisfaction guaranteed. Please see my other eBay auctions for more rare and scarce railroad paper. I provide personal service without silly eBay games like waiting for payment before shipping, mandated payment methods, clumsy communications and charging for return shipping. Please check my feedback and DSR's. Everything I sell is POSTPAID USA, so the winning bid is what you pay, plus eBay’s state tax if applicable, unless you want special services. I normally ship first day after auction ends IF I have a payment plan & a proper shipping address, or you are a recent previous buyer. Thank you for reading.
