    Description

Your bid is for The NEW ENGLAND STATES LIMITED, Volume 5, Number 1, with an inside cover date of March 1983. This issue measures 21.5 by 28.0 cm and contains 36 pages with Editor and Publisher Donald B. Valentine. The front cover features Vermont Railway RS-3 No.603 in South Wallingford, while the rear cover is a fine color photo of Green Mountain RS-l No. 401 high above the Mill River in East Wallingford. Both works of Frederick G. Bailey. In Running Extra, the editor runs on about the continued scrapping of historic rail equipment because no one seemed to care. And it goes on in 2014 undiminished as the fine arts are ridiculously glorified and the industrial arts are trashed. With many exceptions fortunately... The Mail Bag is a fascinating study of the whys and wherefores of why this turned out to be the last issue of the NESL; the NHRHTA was comatose until recently; and the B&MRRHS,INC. is a struggling cripple on life support. Don Valentine has the right idea: forget the politics and egos, produce the material that people want and will pay for! New England Rail News covers 3 columns and features 3 photos. THE KENNEBEC CENTRAL RAILROAD is subtitled: A Brief History of a Short and Narrow Line! by Kenneth M. Daggert. The opening sentence says it all: "The Kennebec Central R.R. was, perhaps, the smallest and least well-known of the little two foot gauge railroads in Maine." You have to love an author who starts off smoothly. If Maine or narrow gauge or steam traction or short lines or funky transport is your thing, you'll want to read all about it here on 6 pages and study well the 12 photographs. VERMONT IS ALCO COUNTRY! by Frederick G. Bailey explains in text and photos and a full-page map the many roads still using ALCO's in 1981-83. The variety is amazing as you'll find on these 14 pages that include 27 photos. I should interject here that the only color in this issue are the covers, which is sort of sad considering what might have been. RAILROADS CHARTERED TO SERVE NEW ENGLAND (PART III) by L. Peter Cornwall fills 2 pages and the neat thing about this listing is it occasionally lists research sources, some of which are quite obscure. The Back Shop covers many different subjects in this issue with primary focus on the PFM Rutland L-1 Mountain type. Remember the Green Hornets! This magazine is in superb, unread, new-old-stock condition. A photocopy of the final Subscriber's Newsletter is included.
Your satisfaction guaranteed. Please see my other eBay auctions for more rare and scarce railroad paper. I provide personal service without silly eBay games like waiting for payment before shipping, mandated payment methods, clumsy communications and charging for return shipping. Please check my feedback and DSR's. Everything I sell is POSTPAID USA, so the winning bid is what you pay, plus eBay’s state tax if applicable, unless you want special services. I normally ship first day after auction ends IF I have a payment plan & a proper shipping address, or you are a recent previous buyer. Thank you for reading.
