    Description

Your bid is for Volume 4, Number 4, of THE NEW ENGLAND STATES LIMITED, which has an inside front cover date of September 1982 and a copyright of 1983. This issue contains 40 pages and measures 21.5 by 27.9 cm with Editor and Publisher Donald B. Valentine. The front cover shows a herd of GP-9's passing just south of Franklin, New Hampshire. The Mail Bag addresses some interesting issues on Newport Hill. In Running Extra, the editor discusses the ongoing soap opera called Steamtown. New England Rail News covers some 3 pages plus, and includes 7 photos and many juicy stories of who is now running what, plus the latest wreck and so forth. All followed by a 7 page feature by Gregg Turner and Alice Ramsdell entitled THE EAST THOMPSON WRECK! This occurred on the New York and New England Railroad in 1891 and is a fascinating study of how these sad events happened despite 60 years of practice in the business of running trains. Included are 9 period photos, including 3 of the wreck itself, plus a NY&NE map. East Thompson, Connecticut, was 43.3 rail miles out of Boston and the junction with the branch to Southbridge, Massachusetts. Which line, incidentally, was abandoned in 2004 by the Providence & Worcester RR. RIDING THE NORTHERN by Donald B. Valentine, Jr., continues from the previous issue with the B&M's line on the 70 miles from Concord, New Hampshire, to White River Junction, Vermont, over 6 pages, with 11 neat photos nicely reproduced. Then THE NORTHERN AWAKENS! by the same author covers 7 pages, including one in color, with 2 photos on the contemporary (1982) scene. Who would have thought then that the rails would soon be gone? The Back Shop contains 9 pages, mostly devoted to modeling B&M diesels for the "Northern" line, but various steam models are covered also from the CV, Rutland and New Haven. 9 nice photos of B&M cab units if we can agree that a BL2 is a cab unit. A two page review of N.J. International New Haven Class L-l 2-10-2 ends this fine issue, save for the color rear cover photos of two Bluebirds on a wood trestle at Knowles and a Pioneer Valley Railroad No. 27 being welcomed to Westfield, Massachusetts. A photocopy of the 6 (six!) page Subscriber's Newsletter, Vol. IV, No.4, Feb. 1983 Mailing, is included. And where have you seen THAT offered lately? This magazine is in unread, new-old-stock, nearly as-published condition. Your satisfaction guaranteed. Please see my other eBay auctions for more rare and scarce railroad paper. I provide personal service without silly eBay games like waiting for payment before shipping, mandated payment methods, clumsy communications and charging for return shipping. Please check my feedback and DSR's. Everything I sell is POSTPAID USA, so the winning bid is what you pay, plus eBay’s state tax if applicable, unless you want special services. I normally ship first day after auction ends IF I have a payment plan & a proper shipping address, or you are a recent previous buyer. Thank you for reading.
