    Description

Malwani Livi Manual Espresso Grinder (83mm Conical Mazzer Burrs). Condition is "Used". Local pickup only.
    Local pickup only.
The Malwani Livi is a beautiful espresso grinder, made in Germany with planetary gears inside, 83mm conical burrs, and trimmed with Zebrano wood. No manual or other information came with the original shipment.
    See the manufacturer’s website here:

This grinder had a rough ride and took some serious knocks during shipping, resulting in a wobbly case, some nicks and scuffs on the metal case, a small crack in the wood top panel, and a panel on the wood base that was separating from the frame.  The crack in the top panel is visible in the last two pictures but difficult to see.
I was able to correct the wobble in the case by tightening the hex bolts and a drop of glue fixed the wooden base (it grinds solidly now without wobble). Note that if you need help later disassembling or doing maintenance on the grinder, there are no manuals I’m aware of, so you will be left to your own mechanical skills.
This is great deal simply because I already replaced the stock burrs with genuine Mazzer burrs, which are a ~0 value in themselves.
So with this grinder you’ll get the installed Mazzer 83mm burrs as well as the stock burrs in the Mazzer box.
In the spirit of full transparency, I’m selling this grinder because I didn’t really love the results. It grinds fine enough for espresso (and I’ve pulled about 20 shots with it), but I found the coffee a bit bitter compared to my flat burr grinders.
With this grinder my best results have come with darker roasts, but even then I preferred the other grinders I have on hand. I also felt like the design of the funnel was a bit messy to work with. Some in the coffee community suggested that the experience will improve as the burrs season, but I’m not so sure and not that patient. Because the grinder had a rough journey, it is possible that it has become slightly out of alignment. I don’t quite have the skills to test this or correct it if that is the case.
The 83mm conical burrs are something of a known quantity in the coffee community, since the hugely popular Mazzer Robur grinder (also 83mm conical) is used in cafes all over the world. They tend to create a broader particle distribution when grinding that makes it very easy to dial in shots, but can, for some coffees and palettes, create those bitter and sour notes I described above. But because such conical burrs are quite common, some people like this taste profile very much.
If you are a mechanical person who likes manual tools and would be interested in working through these issues and flaws, this grinder could be for you.
Note that I set this auction for local pickup only.
This is because the grinder is heavy (~30+ pounds) and will likely require a box 20 inches tall to accommodate packing material.
With shipments like this I would also pay UPS for insurance, tracking, and custom packaging so that I can feel more confident it will arrive without additional damage.
All of these items could potentially push shipping above 0, which I don’t think is reasonable for most buyers.
