The Atlantic and Pacific Steamship Company originated in the early 1900s owning and operating the
steamships: Santa Clara, Santa Olivia, Santa Cruz, Cortes, and the Malta. In about 1912, the
    W. R. Grace & Company purchased the Atlantic and Pacific Steamship Company line to obtain a fleet of U.S. flagged ships; previously Grace only owned British flagged ships.
The activities of both companies and the parent firm were consolidated into the Grace Steamship Company beginning in 1916. The firm originally specialized in traffic to the west coast of South America, then expanded into the Caribbean. After World War II, the company gradually withdrew from holdings in Latin America and finally abandoned the shipping business altogether to concentrate on chemicals in 1969. It is still in business, but not as a shipping concern. At its peak, the Grace Line was a major force in American merchant shipping. Shortly after World War II it owned 23 ships totaling 188,000 gross tons, plus 14 more on bare boat charters. The Grace Line flag was red with the word "GRACE" in blue on white.
Joseph Peter Grace (1872 – 1950) was the son of William Russell Grace who was the founder of W. R. Grace & Company. Joseph P. Grace was president of W. R. Grace & Company from 1907 to 1945. He was also the president of the Atlantic and Pacific Steamship Company, which was controlled by the W. R. Grace & Company.
    William Russell Grace (1832 – 1904)
    was the first Roman Catholic
    mayor of New York City
    and the
founder of W. R. Grace and Company
    . Grace was
    born in Ireland
in Riverstown near the Cove of Cork to James Grace and Eleanor May Russell (Ellen) while the family was away from home, and raised on Grace property at Ballylinan in Queens (now Laois) County near the town of Athy, He was a member of the prominent and well-to-do family.
In 1846, Grace sailed for New York
against the wishes of his father, and worked as a printer's devil and a shoemaker's helper before returning to Ireland in 1848.
William and his father, James Grace, traveled to Callao, Peru, in 1851, seeking to establish an Irish agricultural community.
James returned home but William remained, where he began work with the firm of John Bryce and Company, as a ship chandler. In 1854, the company was renamed
Bryce, Grace & Company, in 1865
    , to
    Grace Brothers & Company
    , and then
    W. R. Grace and Company
. Opposing the famous Tammany Hall, Grace was elected as the
first Irish American Catholic mayor of New York
    City in
    1880
. He conducted a reform administration attacking police scandals, patronage and organized vice; reduced the tax rate, and broke up the Louisiana Lottery. Defeated in the following election, he was re-elected in 1884 on an Independent ticket but lost again the following time.
During his second term, William Russell Grace received the Statue of Liberty as a gift from France. W. R. Grace and Company was founded in Peru in the mid-19th century
to engage in the guano trade. William R. Grace
relocated to New York in 1866
    . What later became the
Grace Line originated in 1882 as a line of sailing vessels between Peru and New York
. Grace established regular steamship service in 1893 with a subsidiary called the
New York & Pacific Steamship Company
, operating under the British flag because ships built outside the United States were banned from U. S. registry until 1905.
    U. S.-flag service began in 1913 with the Atlantic and Pacific Steamship Company.
