    Description
    The
Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad (P&LE),
    also known as the
    "Little Giant",
    was a small railroad that
connected Pittsburgh, PA with Youngstown, OH
    . It was called the
    "Little Giant"
because the tonnage it hauled was well out of proportion to its size - it
    served steel mills
and carried not only finished steel product but also coal, ores, limestone and ingots. Formed in 1873, it was
at varying times controlled by the New York Central, Penn Central and Conrail
    . It became independent after
    Conrail
    was broken up between
    CSX
    and
    Norfolk Southern
    , although it
    operated as a separate entity
    .
CSX gained control of the P&LE in 1993
    .
For auction is an employee "Time Book" for a track crew working at Lowellville, Ohio, during February 1902.
The crew consisted of a foreman and 15 laborers. The work day was 10 hours.
This book records the days and hours worked, pay rates, the work done on days of the month, and a summary of work done during the month.
    The book measures appx 8 x 5 1/4 inches closed, 10 1/2 x 8 inches opened, and
    contains 16 pages
. Not all pages have entries. The cover is a mid-weight cardstock, and the content pages are a lower-grade kraft paperstock. This book is in
    good condition
    , considering it was a
    document used in the field
    and is
    over 110 years old
. All writing/markings are from its use. There are couple of edge snags. The cover binding edge is torn about 3/4 of the length.
A nice collectible for any P&LE railfan.
